Ginger, without any doubt, is a part of almost, well, all the recipes around the world. Cooking without it just doesn’t seem right. However, we never want you to skip it just because you don’t have it. In this article, we’ll be discussing Fresh Ginger Substitute that you can use in your recipes to make them taste delicious as always.
Ginger
We know you know what a Ginger is, but we want to throw some light on it. Ginger is a well-known flowering plant mainly found in South East Asia. It is considered the healthiest and most beneficial spice because of its flavor profile and numerous health benefits.
You might be surprised to know that Gingers is very closely related to spices such as:
- Cardamom
- Galangal
- Turmeric
The rhizome part of Ginger is the part that is used as a spice. So in simple words, it is the Ginger roots being used as a spice.
Fresh Ginger Substitutes
We’ve always come across people who are seen struggling with a lack of Ginger when needed. Though it’s a common ingredient, you may run out of it. When you do run out, you can use some of the following Fresh Ginger Substitutes in your dishes:
Powdered Ginger
Powdered Ginger is an excellent Fresh Ginger Substitute. It’s something that you always have in your pantry. Well, we do, always. With powdered Ginger, you do not have to do much, and it’s a little mild compared to the Fresh Ginger.
The only thing you need to be careful about while working with Ginger powder is not to add too much. Why? Because it’s concentrated and can easily boost the flavors of your dish when little of it is added. If your recipe requires a tbsp of fresh ginger, add ½ tsp of powdered Ginger while cooking.
Candied Ginger
This substitute is hands down delicious. Candied Ginger is crystallized, Ginger. You may find it easily in your nearest supermarket. However, in times of Corona, many things have become difficult to get your hands on. You can always find Trader Joe’s Crystallized Candied Ginger (8 Oz.) Pack on Amazon and get it delivered at home. It is made by rolling the Ginger in Sugar syrup. This makes it sweeter.
Candied Ginger is mainly used for baked goods because of its sweet content. So if a recipe asks for ½ cup of minced Ginger, you add 3 tbsp of minced Candied Ginger in it, and that shall do the job.
Allspice
You might be surprised at this one, but Allspice is also considered a good Fresh Ginger Substitute. It has this mildly sweet and spicy taste that has brought it to our attention to be used as a substitute. Other than Allspice, you may even add freshly ground Cinnamon or Nutmeg as well.
If a recipe asks for a tbsp of Fresh Ginger, you may add a stick of Cinnamon to it for the flavor.
Mace
It’s ok if you never heard of Mace before because we also didn’t know about it until we started our research. Mace is made up of the coating of Nutmeg seeds which gives it a warm and spicy flavor. However, it does have a little pepperiness to it and a little sweetness as well.
Mace is mainly used for desserts that call for the addition of Fresh Ginger. For example, use 1/4th tsp of Mace for a tbsp of Fresh Ginger Substitute.
You can find Mace easily on Amazon and get it delivered.
Galangal
It is another great Fresh Ginger Substitute that you can find on Amazon. Galangal is a cross between Ginger and Turmeric, giving it the best of both worlds.
You can easily find it in many Asian stores. For example, if a recipe calls for a tbsp of Fresh Ginger, add 1 tbsp to 1 and 1/4th tbsp.
